Skiing in Maine

Just got back from Sunday River. It was a day of firsts for me: first time in Maine and first time skiing. :-) And I loved just about every minute of it!
Two friends of mine talked me into this. It all started on Wednesday. Indy won a contest offering a two for one bus to Sunday River and lift ticket so she invited me to go with her. Then, her good friend Mike joined in. Good thing too; he drove us to the bus - which left at 5 o'clock in the morning.
And that morning drive... was a thrilling adventure by itself. It only took Mike fifteen minutes to pick up both Indy and I from our homes - located in different sides of the city - and get us all to Riverside station (where the bus was). Can't tell you how many times he could've lost his driving license this morning, but he managed the impossible! Despite a late departure, he got us there on time.
Maine is really awesome!. It reminded me a bit of the Romanian mountain villages. Wonderful views, nice cottages...; all in all a neat place to visit.

Sunday River lived up to the expectations too. Very pretty setting and fairly easy to figure out.
Took us about an hour and a half to map out the place a bit and get our gears. Not all that bad for first timers.
It was an unbelievable day for skiing - sunny, not too cold (just a touch of mild wind here and there to remind you that you are on a mountain and it is winter). It had snowed just last night (six inches) so the conditions on the slopes were marvelous.
Mike got a snowboard, while me and Indy registered for a skiing class. Since the next class was starting at 1 PM and she had been skiing previously, we decided to hit the easiest slope accessible by lift.
To my great surprise and pride, I was not the first one to fall while skiing on the slope. But, on the other hand, falling kinda discouraged Indy from going up again; so I ended up skiing pretty much by myself for a couple of hours. By the time the class started, I had been on three or four slopes and... most of them were definitely not for beginners. It got pretty steep and scary on quite a few occasions. well, nothing a good fall here and there can't fix. :-)
I managed not to break anything and that's my "prize of the day".
When I finally got to my class they were half way into it. Someone gave me wrong instructions at the lift and I ended up on one of the long slopes. :-) That was... interesting (skiing down I mean); took me about 45 minutes. But at least I made it to the base in one piece.
Anyway, the instructor was nice enough to stay longer and give me sort of a private lesson after the other two girls in the class left. I told him I didn't know when I will be able to do this again.

It was so much fun! I had a blast today and I really needed some time in the nature. Some excuse to get away and be young again.
